Relationships/Sex Education (RSE)

RSE Curriculum Statement

The Governors at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Primary School have adopted the ‘Journey in Love’ programme to support the non-statutory Relationships and Sex Education throughout the school. The programme of study is authentic to the teaching of the Catholic Church.

At the heart of Christian faith is love. This means that we have to link every aspect of our being, from birth to death, with love. The ‘Journey in Love’ programme has at its source, the belief that we are made in the image and likeness of God.

A Journey in Love

In each year group, an aspect of the mystery of love is explored. The children are encouraged to marvel at the wonder and beauty of God’s love. They take part in a series of tasks, activities and reflections which focus on physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development.

The focus for each year group is as follows:

Reception: God loves us in our uniqueness
Year 1: We meet God’s love in our family
Year 2: We meet God’s love in the community
Year 3: How we live in love
Year 4: God loves us in our differences
Year 5: God loves me in my changing and development
Year 6: The wonder of God’s love in creating new life

As parents/carers, you have the right to withdraw your child from this aspect of the curriculum. However, you do not have the right to withdraw your child from the aspects that fall within the science curriculum which is statutory for all children.

If you require any further clarification regarding our Relationships and Sex Education Policy, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.
