Year 1

Welcome to Autumn term of year 1! We have lots of exciting lessons planned across the curriculum over the next several weeks.

English

This half term our core texts are ‘Cave Baby’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘Sidney, Stella & the Moon’ by Emma  Yarlett. We will have lots of opportunities to write in a variety of ways and explore language features throughout our units. These are lovely texts, rich in vocabulary.

Phonics

Our Read, Write Inc. lessons will continue and we would like the children to read the books sent home with your child regularly. Please ensure these books are returned to school each week.

Maths

In maths we will be learning about place Value to 10, addition and subtraction and shape. We will also be learning how to count in 2s,5s and 10s. Weekly homework will be given out. Please ensure this is completed and returned to school.

RE

In our RE lessons, we are learning about creation. After half term we will be learning about the events leading up to the birth of Jesus as we approach Advent.

Science

In science we are learning about animals including humans and seasonal changes as we go into autumn and winter.

Geography

In geography the children will be learning about our local area. The children will complete map work and will explore our local area on a walk, looking for features around Kirkby.

History

In history we will be learning all about The Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes.

Music

In music children will be singing, looking at a range of different music and playing a variety of musical  percussion instruments.

Art

In art we will be learning about the artist Georges Seurat and the technique of ‘Pointillism’ in our artwork, creating our own pieces linked to the season of autumn.

DT

In DT this term we will be learning how to make a windmill structure linked to our work in science on Autumn.

Computing

In computing we will be learning about online safety and how to stay safe when using a computer.

PE

Our topic this half term is dance and tennis after half term. The children will be learning a sequence of movements to create a dance routine and how to hit and receive a ball in tennis.

PSHE

Our topic for this half term is ‘Me, my body and my health, emotional well being and life cycles.

Useful information

  • Reading books are changed regularly. Please ensure you read with your child as often as Year 1 is an important year and their ability to read and understand texts is crucial.
  • Homework- spellings will be given out every Monday in preparation for a test on the following Friday. One piece of maths and reading books will also be given out every week.
  • PE is on a Tuesday until half term. The children can come to school in their PE kits and trainers. Please ensure your children has a yellow polo shirt, their school jumper/cardigan and navy or black shorts. In cold weather the children may wear dark jogging bottoms.
  • Please use our new Class dojo system to keep updated about homework, school events and class stories.
