Year 2

Welcome to our Year 2 class page

We are delighted to have you and your child with us this year. Year 2 is an exciting stage in your child’s learning journey, full of opportunities to build confidence, independence, and a love of learning.

On this page, you will find updates about our curriculum, key dates, and examples of the children’s work. We will also share reminders and important information to help keep you connected with what’s happening in class.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child and make this a happy, successful year for everyone.

PE

Our PE day is Tuesday. The PE uniform is a gold or yellow t-shirt, navy blue shorts and pumps. During the colder months children may wear dark coloured tracksuit bottoms as opposed to shorts.

Homework

Weekly spellings will be sent home on a Friday to be tested on the following Friday.

Reading books are based on the RWI sounds and texts they are working on each week. The books will be changed every Wednesday, if you could aim to read with your child at least 3 times per week and complete the reading log too.

A piece of maths homework linked to basic skills will also be given out on a Friday, to be returned the following Friday.

English

This term, our English learning will be centred on two wonderful picture books: The Bear under the Stairs by Helen Cooper and The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield.

These engaging stories give the children the chance to explore themes of imagination, friendship, and self-belief. Through them, we will develop comprehension skills by discussing characters, settings, and key events. The children will also expand their vocabulary and see how authors use language to create mood and emotion. Along the way, they will build confidence in their own writing, from creative storytelling to writing with purpose, while making connections between the texts and their own experiences.

By the end of the unit, the children will have not only enjoyed two beautifully illustrated stories, but also strengthened their reading, writing, and speaking skills in meaningful and creative ways.

Maths

In Maths this term, we will be focusing on three key areas: place value, addition and subtraction, and shape. The children will begin by deepening their understanding of place value, learning how numbers are made up of tens and ones, and using this knowledge to compare and order numbers with increasing confidence.

We will then move on to addition and subtraction, developing strategies for solving problems both mentally and in written form. The children will be encouraged to explain their thinking and apply their skills in practical contexts.

Later in the term, we will explore 2D and 3D shapes, recognising their properties, describing them using mathematical language, and beginning to understand how shapes fit together in the world around us.

Throughout the term, our aim is to strengthen fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning skills, helping the children to become confident, curious mathematicians.

RE

This term in RE, we will be diving into the fascinating themes of Creation and Covenant and Prophecy and Promise. The children will explore the story of creation in Genesis, discovering how it reveals God’s love for the world and His special relationship with His people.

As we move on to covenant and promise, the children will uncover how these powerful ideas run throughout the Bible and continue to shape the world around us today. They will have the chance to ask big questions, share their own thoughts, and reflect on how promises and responsibilities influence our lives.

Through stories, discussions, and creative activities, we hope to spark curiosity and inspire the children to see how these ancient texts connect with their own experiences and the world they live in.

Science

In Science this term, we will be exploring Living Things and Their Habitats as well as Animal Survival and Growth. The children will investigate the fascinating variety of habitats around the world, learning how animals and plants are perfectly suited to the places they live. They will discover how living things depend on each other and what happens when habitats change.

We will also look closely at how animals, including humans, grow and survive. The children will find out what animals need to stay healthy, how they change as they grow, and why life cycles are so important.

Through hands-on activities, observations, and investigations, we aim to nurture curiosity and encourage the children to ask questions about the natural world around them, helping them see themselves as young scientists.

Geography

Our Geography topic this term is Would You Prefer to live in a Hot or a Cold Place? The children will explore the similarities and differences between hot and cold environments around the world, learning about their weather, landscapes, animals, and the people who live there.

We will compare daily life in contrasting locations and think carefully about what it might be like to live in each climate. This will encourage the children to ask questions, make comparisons, and form their own opinions about where they would prefer to live and why.

By the end of the topic, the children will have a better understanding of how climate affects the way people live and how the environment shapes our experiences of the world.

Computing

In computing this term, our topic is My Online Life. The children will be developing their digital literacy skills while learning how to use technology safely and responsibly.

We will focus on understanding how to stay safe online, how to recognise and respond to potential risks, and how to use digital tools in a positive and respectful way. The children will also begin to think about their own digital footprint and how their actions online can affect themselves and others.

Our aim is to give the children the confidence to enjoy the benefits of the online world while knowing how to keep themselves safe and make sensible choices.

Art

In Art this term, we will be exploring the work of artist Megan Coyle, who is well known for her colourful and imaginative collages. The children will study her unique style, where she layers cut paper to create vibrant images that look almost like paintings.

Using her work as inspiration, the children will experiment with different textures, colours, and patterns to create collages of their own. This will help them develop their creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence in expressing themselves through art.

By the end of the unit, the children will have produced their own striking collage pieces while gaining an appreciation of how artists can use everyday materials to create something extraordinary.

Music

In Music this term, our topic is Class Band. The children will have the opportunity to work together as a group, learning how to listen carefully, keep in time, and play simple rhythms and melodies. This collaborative approach will help them to develop confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation of how music is created and performed.

As we move towards the festive season, we will also be learning a range of Christmas songs. This will give the children the chance to experience the joy of performing, while building their understanding of how music brings people together and creates shared memories.

Our aim is not only to teach musical skills but also to inspire a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation for music in all its forms.

Design Technology

In DT this term, our focus is Cooking and Nutrition. The children will be learning about the importance of a balanced diet and how the food we eat helps us to stay healthy.

They will develop practical skills by preparing fruit and vegetables, exploring different ways of cutting, peeling, and combining ingredients safely and hygienically. Along the way, they will have the chance to taste and evaluate their creations, thinking carefully about flavour, texture, and presentation.

This topic aims to give the children both an understanding of healthy eating and the confidence to make positive food choices, while also enjoying the fun of cooking together.
